Gordon the Big Engine: When Big Size Really Matters

We knew Gordon the Big Engine even before it became a part of the children’s television series, Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. That title – The Big Engine – is appropriate and suitable for its character in the series.

Gordon the Big Engine is, basically, a story-bound big “blue tender engine.” In the story, he is known as train number 4.

Because of his size, Gordon believes that he is the most important engine. Plus, he is the one who pulls the Express.

Basically, Gordon the Big Engine is classified as a 4-6-2 engine. 4-6-2 refers to the wheel arrangement in an engine, meaning it has four primary wheels, coupled with six driving wheels, and 2 trailing wheels. This type of engine is comparable to that of the “LNER A1 Steam Tender Engine.”

In the movie, ‘Thomas and the Magical Railroad,” Gordon the Big Engine was voiced by Neil Crone. But prior to this exposure, Gordon the Big Engine was first seen on Railways Series in 1945. The movie was about the fictional railway that is situated on the story bound Island of Sodor were the engines, like Gordon, lived on it.

Gordon the Big Engine was also featured in the popular book, “Three Railway Engines,” where two other engines were included, Henry the Green Engine and Edward the Blue Engine.

Gordon the Big Engine was also a part of the first episode of the “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends.” The episode was entitled, ‘Thomas and Gordon.”

Because of Gordon’s sense of haughtiness or arrogance, he had been into many mischief and adventures throughout the series and the films that were made. These include the following:

1. Stuck on the hill.

In this part of the story, Gordon the Big Engine was stuck on a certain hill. Luckily, he was rescued by Edward the Blue Engine. Because of this incidence, the hill is now known as “Gordon’s Hill.”

2. In a certain scene, Gordon the Big Engine had lost his dome when he was trying to beat the Famous Visitor.

3. He was teased by Thomas the Tank Engine after Gordon the Big Engine had fallen into a “ditch” after he had tried all his might to avoid “pulling trucks.”

4. Gordon the Big Engine was also known for his good deeds when he helped James on the slippery tracks.

5. He was known to be one of the engines who formed an alliance with Thomas the Tank Engine.

6. There was also one incident when he had almost crashed headlong into Percy the Small Engine.
