A distant cousin and friend of the family, retired businessman Edmund Ward, later learned of the stories and decided to publish them. The series was so successful that Ward stopped his retirement and began publishing full-time.

After 26 books written by Rev. Awdry, it was his son's Christopher to write. Christopher began to continue the series when Richard, his own son, was three - about the same age when Christopher's family started with the Railway series. With Christopher, the series had additional 40 books which were supported by the increasing number of fans all over the world.

Today, Thomas the Tank Engine has become among the children's favorite book characters of all time. The series have sold 25 million copies in the United States alone. Worldwide, the series are sold at nearly 80 million units and still growing.

Thomas turns to TV

The popularity of the Thomas the Tank Engine reached to huge proportions when Britt Allcroft started producing it for television. Alffcroft's efforts have changed the landscape of children's television. The series is now available in more than 120 countries, jumpstarting a successful, multi-million entertainment outfit.
