Thomas The Train has taken a huge step forward from its beginnings in the books authored by Rev. W. Awdry for his son. The name has extended into the commercial market with a strong retail presence that includes toys, apparel and a television show.
since the famous tank engine has a strong connection with children, particularly boys, one area where it has become a major trademark is the toy market.
The Thomas the Train Musical Carousel is one of a huge number of toys and accessories bearing the name of the popular steam locomotive. This musical and educational toy takes on a carnival-comes-to-town theme, where the trains are expected to transport the animals to the carousel.
A knob on top controls the spinning movement and music of the carousel, where the magnetic animals can then be attached. The 7.5"-high carousel can be used with the Maxim, BRIO and other wooden railway systems featuring Thomas and his friends.
The Learning Curve is one of several manufacturers of the Thomas Carousel, which was phased out in 2004. The package, which included two cargo cars and four hourses, could be used by children at least three years of age.
Since the toy could no longer be available, those lucky enough to have bought the Thomas Carousel would have to take good care of it. The fact that the carousel is no longer in stock makes it doubly necessary for the owner to ensure that it does not get broken, as replacement parts may prove to be a near impossible task even at local toy repair shops.
One way of prolonging the life of the carousel is to turn the knob only in the right direction when winding it up. This control mechanism should not be forced, as too much pressure could destroy the knob and prevent the carousel from continuing its circular movement and musical play. Possibly the only option left for the carousel when it can no longer move is to have it displayed on the shelf.
Putting a little oil also on the springs would help prolong the toy's life. However, this should not be done frequently, as there is little chance that the carousel would rust easily.
Cleaning should not entail use of wax or other traditional household chemicals. As long as the Thomas the train carousel is kept inside a cabinet, dusting the piece on occasion would be enough to keep it clean.
In case of accidental spills such as sauces, coffee or other liquids, simply dabbing the toy with cotton soaked in water with a mild detergent usually eliminates the stain. After doing so, the carousel should be completely dried by light patting or setting it in a warm place before it it kept.
Since children as young as three are the ones expected to handle the Thomas the Train musical carousel the most, it would be wise for their parents to advise their children on basic handling tips, including avoiding throwing the toy around, banging the toy against a solid object and keeping the toy in a safe place when the child is through playing.
For parents who are often at home when their children play, it would also help to have the child play on the rug or a rubber flooring or mat as a safeguard to accidental drops of the carousel.
