Make Your Own
For the frugal, here are simple instructions on how to make your own Thomas the Train Engine and Friends costumes.
* Get a box big enough to fit around your child’s waist. If possible, use boxes that carried heavy items like appliances or cans of food to make sure it is durable even while your child is active at play. You also want a sturdy box that will keep its shape, until the party is over.
* Remove the upper flaps of the box. They will just get in the way of your child’s movement. Tape the edges of the box with paper tape to ensure no splinters are exposed that can scratch your child’s delicate skin. Put extra tape to soften the corners of the box
* Attach suspender belts on each side of the box so your child can “wear” the box. Remember to attach the belts after the box has been painted, but attach it temporarily first to check the fit on your child, and then remove to paint the box. Be creative in choosing suspender belts. It can be the highlight of your costume, like red against the Thomas-blue engine box or choose a subdued color, like black or brown, so the costume seems to float on your child as it is worn.
* Paint box bright blue for Thomas’s color. For the colors of the other characters, see the list below:
** Edward and Gordon – blue engines, same as Thomas’
** Percy, Duck, Daisy and Henry – green engines
** James, Salty, Skarloey and Mike – bright red engines
** Duncan and Diesel – yellow engines
** Lady – golden engine, with accents of pink
** Anna and Carabel – brown coaches
* With colored construction paper add stripes and train number to sides. Make sure to follow the color combinations and design of authentic Thomas and Friends characters to create a costume that is as real as possible.
* Don’t forget the wheels -- black train wheels are the basic, but check the characters’ colors for the right combination. For added detail on coaches, place a strip on top of the wheels to appear like connecting rods.
* On the front make a 3D face with construction paper to match your train of choice. Thomas is cheeky and has big eyes. Instead of a plain black pupil, add shine and life to the eyes by highlighting it with one white spot in the direction of the gaze. This shows some glow in the eyes. Practice this first on scrap paper, before drawing the actual train face.
* Last piece of Thomas the Train costume: the train engineer’s hat! Choose the color that matches with the engine for a uniformed look.
Now you’re ready to party … “All Aboard … Toot!”
